Chi Recommends... The List of All of My Favorites, Arranged By Fandom
I've been wanting to do this for a long time. This is the list of fanfiction that I think is well worth a read, if you've got the time and the inclination. It's arranged by fandom.

Side note: With extraordinary exceptions, all of these fics are complete.

Let's start with:

Harry Potter

1) Heal the Pain by Aibhinn.

Chi says: This fic is classic Harry/Ginny AU angst. The characters are brilliant, more multi-faceted than in the original canon, and Aibhinn does her standard bang-up job of taking the characters to dark places inside of themselves to expose the brighter message of the canon: that love is a power unto itself. Well worth a read for fans of angst, and hurt/comfort fics.

2) The Coven of Echoes by Hwimsey

Chi says: Fans of Poufwa will remember covering this fic. It's definitely nothing like the canon, but it's a fun read with a lot of mystery. If you're looking for a classic HP/GW tale, and can't stand a slightly skewed look at canon, this isn't the fic for you. But if you can, take the journey. It's well worth it.

3)The Shoebox Project by LadyJaida and Dorkorific

Chi says: Prepare to split your sides laughing. The antics of Remus, Sirius, James and Peter are hilarious in this as-yet uncomplete look at their school years. Don't worry too much about it, though... the plot's not all that important. The relationship between the boys... all of their different relationships, is what makes this fic. Two thumbs up... and don't say I didn't warn you.

4) Stealing Harry by Sam-Storyteller

Chi says: Although I'm not much of a fan of the sequels to this fic, as far as Sirius/Remus slash goes, this takes the cake. Sam builds a relationship between Sirius and Remus that is loving, deep and true. One of the best pieces of slash I've ever read, and it gave a sort of credence to the genre that most people easily dismissed as porn. And by most people, I mean me. That being said, if you're not a fan of Draco... skip this one.

5) Harry Potter and the Power of Emotion by Melindaleo

Chi says: Melindaleo's debut novel into the Harry Potter fandom filled a void that the death of GT had left in my heart. This story is everything the post-OotP shipper was looking for... there's angst, but there's also love. There are some powerful themes of hope and trust in this fic, and it and its sequels are well worth a read.

6) Naked Quidditch Match by Anya.

Chi says: Nothing... there's nothing I can say about this that you won't have guessed from the title. I will say this... just... avoid drinking while reading this. Pure silliness!

7) Rebuilding Life by Kezzabear

Chi Says: The fact that I am friendly with the author aside -- this fic is setting the standard for post-DH canon length fic. Although the first ten chapters are rough, the rest sails along smoothly. The author has a lot to say about what love between a man and a woman really is (not just a boy and a girl) and also about what it means to heal and to move on. It has the traditional moments of... well, there's nothing to call it but shippiness, so if H/G doesn't float your boat, skip it. If you're in love with this, then full steam ahead.

8) Horace Slughorn and the Circle of Stones by Plaid Slytherin

Chi Says: I didn't read this fic, initially, because I have little patience in general for fics revolving around Slytherins (sorry, madam_minnie! You're the exception!). They don't really appeal to me. But in this fic, Young!Horace is funny, self-absorbed, multi-faceted and brilliantly written. He's also in a homosexual relationship in a time where that... wouldn't have been accepted. Aside from all of that, he's got a murder to solve! You'll love this fic: It's well-crafted, brilliantly executed and fun to read from start to finish. Leave PS a review, too... I want to encourage her to keep writing because brilliance like this must not be repressed.

9) End of the Line by shewhoguards

Chi Says: A little-known piece of post-DH brilliance. Snape and a few of the other characters arrive at King's Cross Station... but do they choose to move on? When it's not poignant and deeply touching, this fic will make you laugh, what with the slightly clueless conductor and the moments of WTF?ness that pop up... I can also promise you that it will make you cry. No ships in this one -- just brilliance.

10) 17, Clumsy and Shy by Velvethope

Chi says: The first overt smut fic of the rec list! You MUST be 18 to read this fic and you MUST register on Checkmated. I have gone on and on before on PFW about the brilliance of this fic, but no one does awkward teenage sex in a beautiful way like Velvethope. If you haven't read this -- all maybe 2 of you that haven't on my flist over 18, get on it. The Chi commands you.

11) The Cleansweep Series by belovedranger

Chi says: Um... guh. This is also smut. This is also hott. Dominant!Ron, Playful!Hermione... most of all.. they're both way over the age of consent, so no squickiness! Not exactly canon anymore but who gives a rat's arse when the smut is this good? Not Chi!

12) Till Human Voices Wake Us by mrstater

Chi says: It's about time Remus got some straight lovin's on this Remus fan's recommendation list! Tonks and Remus go under cover and build the relationship that we all wanted Remus to have and didn't get to see in the canon. It's heartbreaking, but beautiful in all of the best ways. Read this with tissue, especially if you're a Remus fan.

13) The Angry Post of Mrs. Eliza J. Thumble by KASintonia

Chi says: Harry's an overworked Auror with a lot on his plate... but he's still got time to reply to a slightly psychotic old woman... and the letters he writes parallels his developing relationship with a certain Ginny Weasley. One of my all time favorite framing devices, executed brilliantly. This is another one that will make you laugh... and cry.

14) Witch Weekly: Ten Surefire Ways to Cure the Common Cold by goingbacktosquareone

Chi says: Just one of my favorite one-shots ever. Harry's man-cold is pathetic, Ginny's exasperation is brilliant... and it just makes me happy. Go give it a read and leave her a review!

15) Fortifying the Keep by Aggiebell90

Chi says: As far as I'm concerned, the gold standard in Neville fic from the lady that made Neville fic popular. It just doesn't get any better than this.

16) The Book of Morgan Le Fey by lavenderbrown

Chi says: Although this story isn't normally what I'd recommend in public, it's definitely become an obsessive favorite. The smut is fantastic, the plot is complex, and the resolution is to die for. If you don't like Ron, then this fic isn't for you, but otherwise, you will enjoy yourself very much.

Doctor Who

1) The Crossroads Series by Azriona

Chi says: One of my all-time favorite reunion stories... drama, action, adventure, angst... with a healthy dose of skience and Doctor/Rose thrown in. Also, her recent chapters have been breaking my heart. In the best way possible.

2) A Bit Western. Ish. by humansrsuperior

Chi says: The author takes the audience into a setting you would buy in a regular episode of Who, and challenges the burgeoning relationship between the Doctor and Rose with a series of events only possible in Whodom. The pain of the ride is well worth the end... Oh, and there's completely guh-worthy smut thrown in there, too.

3) Fumbling Towards Ecstasy, the series, by unfolded73.

Chi says: As far as I'm concerned, if you want post-JE fanfiction, there's only three sources from which to get the finest grade, and unfolded73 is one of those sources. This series is brilliant, but in particular I love Testing... in the wake of Journey's End, this is what we needed.

4) The Lostverse, a series by unfolded73

Chi says: The Doctor, Rose and Donna... in the Tardis. The way it should be. No, seriously... this is a great series, although there is one fic in this series that will make you sob uncontrollably for hours. When you set out to read A Little More Time, make sure you set aside like... a day, to go through the grieving process.

5) The Chaosverse by Earlgreytea68

Chi says: The final word in babyfic. Nobody does it like her; nobody does it as well as her. If you don't like babyfic... you're going to like this series. There's no way that you can't. Brem, Athena and Fortuna will win you over -- if the relationship between the Doctor and Rose doesn't. She'll make you laugh, she'll make you cry, and you'll fall in love with her little family. As far as I'm concerned... this is what REALLY happened with the Doctor and Rose.

6) Flowers on Air // Touching Time by Tenzo.

Chi says: It's not original to do Doctor/Rose angst, but Momacress/Tenzo puts a fresh face on what is essentially a tired genre. I think one of the themes that resonates most with me in this fic is trust... the Doctor doesn't take Rose seriously and has to pay the consequences... Don't worry. It ends happily!

7) Wolf Moon by Amberfocus

Chi says: Nine and Rose in an alternate universe... I think I'm speaking honestly from the heart when I say that this is one of the best things Amberfocus has ever written... not only is the smut fantastic (as per her norm), the story line is also powerful and evocative. Well worth a reread, old hats in the fandom!

8) Things-Verse by Jlrpuck (Crossover: Doctor Who/Blackpool)

Chi says: Peter Carlisle and Rose Tyler... it's now my OTP. Seriously, though, JLR crafts a universe that will enthrall you. If you're anything like me, set aside like, a week of your life to read everything in this 'verse, because you're going to be reading it twice. Not only is there a mystery, she also tells a great love story... with two very damaged people, she gently maneuvers them into a healthy relationship. It's got a level of realism that you sometimes just can't achieve in a straight-up Who fic, and if you're not already in love with Peter Carlisle now, you will be after this fic.

9) The Unseen and In Between Series by Gillian R. Delaney

Chi says: That link takes you to her homepage -- all of the fics are listed in order on the sidebar. This fic introduced me to a level of Tardis-love I'd never experienced before. Every one of those stories, which take place between the episodes of series one and series two, will make you laugh and cry... It flushes out canon and makes it, well... even more shippy. But also, it introduces a history for the Doctor that is nothing short of brilliant.

If I had to pick one fic out of the whole series to recommend most emphatically, however, it would be "Fix Him". Give that one a read, and if you're not hooked... nothing will hook you!

10) The Persephone Problem by Lostwolfchats

Although most of you know I'm a HUGE Lostwolf fangirl, this is my all-time favorite fic by her. Its message of trust and love and faith between couples is powerful and deep. Tell you what -- after you're done reading this one, go read everything else she's ever written! It's worth it.

11) Feeling By Proxy, by fid_gin and unfolded73.

Also in this series:
Alone Time

Chi says: Everyone's OT3: Rose/Ten/TenII... written by the most delicious purveyors of smut in the fandom today. If you've not read this yet... GO. NOW. Why are you still here? (unless you're under 18...)

12) In Another Life by Sam Storyteller.

Chi Says: The incomparable Sam Storyteller takes on Journey's End and tells a compelling story about its immediate aftermath on Rose and Ten II. Well worth a read... though I warn you, if you're not a fan of Sam's style, you're not going to like this one. It's Quintessential Sam... But I think it's fabulous.

13) Path of Needles by Tardis Stowaway

Chi says: Stylistically, this is probably the most unique thing on this recommendation list. There's nothing like it out there in the fandom. I adored the symbolism and the references to mythology had me completely geeking out. Two thumbs way, way up!

14) Six Stages of a Time Lord Metacrisis by gowdie

Chi says: This is the post-JE fic that everyone wanted to be able to write. The Doctor is the Doctor and Rose is... Rose and everything's gorgeous and lovely. Want to know what good word choice is? Read this one.

15) The Man in the Moon by Orange Crushed

Chi says: The Zeppelins Doctor feels the Doctor regenerate. It's a gorgeous piece of writing.

16) The Wolf and the Butterfly by Wild Sibyl

Chi says: The distinctive style of this piece will draw you in right from the beginning. But the reason you'll keep reading is that Wild Sibyl is a fantastic author, balancing angst, action and drama in a well-concocted authorial stew.

17) Impossible Adventures Through Time and Space by rosewarren
Note: link takes you to last chapter, which links to all the previous chapters.

Chi says: In the world of post-JE Doctor/Rose canon fic... there's two that really kept my attention focused long enough for me to finish reading them all the way through. Rosewarren tells a fun story, start to finish, with Alt!Doc, Doc, Rose, and a few other characters. It's thrilling to read, and I hope you take the time to do so!

18) The Process of Becoming: Series by kalleah
Note: This link takes you to Teaspoon

Chi says: It's no secret that I enjoy fics with an element of faith, but this whole series is simply superb. Brother Jacob, the original character in this story, is so... completely right. He reminds me very much of some of my own experience with monks (we had an abbey right near the Church when I was growing up). Anyway, aside from spot-on and multi-faceted characterization, the series raises issues that the show won't touch -- as it shouldn't... but confronts them in a way that leaves the reader with no clear view of the author's opinion (although an argument could be made either way). She challenges her audience, you raise to the occasion, and as a reward, she gives you a brilliant story that will impact you for a while after reading. Highly recommended.

19) Planet of the Fangirls by 10_point_5

Chi says: This fic is hilarious. Inspired by all of the picspams and the resultant squees of her flist, 10_point_5 wrote a fic where the Doctor and Rose land in the midst of... well, us. You'll find yourself laughing and blushing as you read along, and she tops it off with cigarette-inducing GUH-level smut.

20) Facing Facts by bananasandroses

Chi says: Mickey Smith is the brunt of a lot of jokes. And let's face it: In Season One, he definitely deserved it, but Season Two shows us a new Mickey: one that's willing to stand up for himself and seeks the better life that Rose speaks so eloquently of in Bad Wolf/Parting of the Ways. This is a gorgeous little Mickey one-shot about what motivates him during Rise of the Cybermen/Age of Steel. Well worth a read.

21) Decisions in the Dark by mswyrr

Chi says: Recommended to me on the unsung_dw daily fic rec, this is a Nine/Rose story that has more to offer than just the typical angst. It's a fic you'll want to read twice. Once to appreciate the plot, and a second time to really appreciate the writing.

22) A Blurry Snapshot by miss_prufrock

Chi says: Every once in a while there comes along a fic that's so unique it has to be appreciated almost in a class by its own. The beauty of this fic is how layered it is -- how keen MissP's narrator is and how much you, as an audience can infer by what the observer sees. It's an outside view of The Doctor and Rose Tyler I don't think you'll soon forget.

23) To Have and Not To Hold by Mtemplar (link takes you to Teaspoon)

Chi says: One of the best novel-length adult stories out there. Not only is the smut grade-A, it's also got a great story to tell with a lot of real subtlety. The author really earned my respect the first time through. This is a fic that deserves rereads, though. I keep coming back to it.</i>

24)Wrongs by Shinodabear

Chi says: Although Jack/Doctor is definitely NOT my OTP, this is a story well-crafted. The dialogue will melt your heart and the angst is palatable. This is the scene that was inferred in Utopia. This is what we need for Jack and the Doctor to be okay. Wonderful, quick read.

25) Endorphins by doctorsdiva This fic is rated NC-17

Chi says: I've a male friend, Alun, that bemoans fic because so few people understand real love -- how it's the little things in life that speak so eloquently of love. This is a fic about that. Rose is injured in a stupid accident at work. The Doctor can no more sonic screwdriver her pain away than could your boyfriend or husband. Instead, he shows her patient, loving care that will bring you to tears. Eat a bar of chocolate, read this fic. Its erotic nature will sneak up on you, and, like Rose, you'll be surprised at how quickly that tenderness translates believably to smut. Still, it will make you long for a Human Doctor of your own. Brilliant, lovely fic. Well worth the three minutes it will take you to read.

26) Other Plans by jessalrynn This fic is rated Adult

Chi says: This fic broke my brain, so I might not be able to coherently tell you why I loved it. Ignore the possibility that it feels like it might be dub-con. You find out very quickly that it's very much a consenting act between two adults. It's also extremely hot -- you just have to read it. With a fresh pair of knickers handy. Trust me on this one.

The West Wing
1) The Joshua Monologues by Spitz the Cat

Chi Says: Although the series sort of descends into a wild pendulum balance of myopic angst and unrealistic fluff, it is at its conception, a light and fun read of the Josh/Donna relationship. Despite its flaws, I find myself returning to this fic over and over and over again. In fact, I may reread after I finish this update. The author develops, too, so while the smut is initially hot, then gets repetitive, it does get better. As a writer and editor interested in developing other young writers, this is a good objective study on how skills develop.

That being said, however. I adore this fic. I can't begin to tell you why. I just do.

2) Season Eight by Jen

18 post-Season Seven four-part episodes. Lots of J/D. Lots of witty dialogue. Lots of fun. Two thumbs up.

3) Unspoken by Sally

Chi says: I didn't want to like this fic... I really didn't. And then, before I knew it, I was crying into my keyboard. The author rips Josh & Donna apart... and then puts them back together again so that they're more delicious. Angst warning, though. If that's not your thing, this isn't the fic for you.

4) Fanfic With Footnotes by Ryo Sen and Jo

Chi says: This another one of those series that I've read over and over and over again. The authors have rapier wit, but they can also bleed your heart with angst. Brilliant writing all around.

This is in no way complete. It will be updated as needed -- when favorite fics are completed, etc. If you think I've missed something, leave me a comment! I hope you use it!

Thanks for the rec (and my first ever fic, even!) but I must poke you for not including the previous two fics for fid_gin and unfolded73's ten/tenII/Rose OT3 series in your rec for Feeling By Proxy. I have a soft spot for Feeling By Proxy especially because I am so hopelessly in love with Ten II but both Alone Time and Unspeakable are equally as magnificent.
Chiladychi on October 29th, 2008 07:20 pm (UTC)
You're so right! At the very least, I should link to the other two fics...

Also, if I may be so bold, this might be a better link to use for Flowers on Air/Touching Time:

I do like that link better! I'd forgotten it was there and/or can't navigate the web successfully...

I'm still going through the Time & Chips archive trying to find a few fics from less well-known authors... I was thinking of subtitling this post:
"LadyChi fangirls Unfolded73 and Sam Storyteller" until then...

No fangirling of unfolded73 that you do will ever approach the epic fangirling of her and fid_gin that I did here.

Also, if you're looking to have your fic memory jogged, here's my rec list.
unfolded73 on October 30th, 2008 04:08 am (UTC)
You guys! Stop it. You're ... making me feel marginally better tonight. On second thought, fangirl on. Thanks, ladychi. I hereby proclaim that I shall write you a fic for Christmas.

The year I'm having? That would pretty much make my life! No one ever writes fic for me... *sniff sniff*

No pressure or anything!

I have to put in a nod for After the End. I know you're not in love with it, but it's one of the best H/G R/H fics out there. It's also my absolute favorite fic ever, and the one that brought me to PFW and thus to you. :)
Chiladychi on October 30th, 2008 04:21 am (UTC)
I'll consider it -- though this is really a list of all of my very, very favorites....
The Plaid Slytherin: I <3 Horaceplaid_slytherin on October 29th, 2008 11:13 pm (UTC)
Eee! Thanks for the rec! :D I feel especially special being a WiP on here. (And yeah, I'm working on it...)

That being said, it is scary how similar our tastes are, because swap most of the slash out of my list and add some ones I haven't read... and we could have made the same post...

Some great links, although I fear that I won't be able to adapt to a new Doctor after 10 - he's really become the best incarnation for me.

The news this evening is, while not totally unexpected, still a big shock. Of course, we still have five hours left of him - will be interesting to see who 11 will be and how they kill 10 off.
Chiladychi on October 30th, 2008 04:22 am (UTC)
He's certainly MY Doctor.

I think I'll be okay... except I'm not a huge fan of Steven Moffet, the writer. We'll just have to see how things go.

Oh my God, Chi, I think I love you... This list is great and posted right when I'm feeling a lull in my fanfiction-to-read list. I was just about to reread Shoebox xD. *huggles*. Trust me, this list will be put to good use.

*HUGS* I was just thinking how AWESOME it is that I'd consider myself friends with more than half of the authors on my favorites list... I've come a long way since I first started in fandom!

I'm first on the list b/c you thought of me first. Yes, that's it. No way am I actually first on the list. Nope. It's alphabetical by penname. Mm-hmm. *nods*

Also, I agree entirely with all the Doctor Whos, and about half the Harry Potters. Did you ever read The Incredible Bouncing Ferret? I'm not sure how good it is on the re-read now, but at the time, I loved it.
Chiladychi on October 31st, 2008 03:47 am (UTC)
I've never encountered The Incredible Bouncing Ferret... I shall have to look it up.

*Is saying nothing about your first point...*
Sharon: Ravenclawazriona on October 31st, 2008 10:45 am (UTC)
Hmm. I was just looking, and it seems to have been taken offline, which is quite sad. ("Draco Malfoy, The Amazing Bouncing...Rat?" by Maya, incidentally.) Darn, it was seriously funny, one of the few I remember really loving. But I also stopped reading HP fanfic about three or four years ago, so most of the ones I liked are seriously AU at this point....

And no, it's better to have nothing said about the first point. Rather presumptuous of me, anyway. *grin*
taliatoennien on November 2nd, 2008 05:44 am (UTC)
Yaaaay, fics! And, no matter what else I have going on, starting a rec with "classic Harry/Ginny angst" is gonna make me want to drop everything and read it, lol.

I have links on my geocities web page for recommendations. Do you mind if I link in this post? I don't think anyone ever goes there (it's mostly for my own reference), but I collect recs as well as other things on there.

I hope you're feeling better!
